Fatherhood Improves Fidelity

The constant interaction of a man with members of his family may cause his testosterone levels to drop, contributing to his faithfulness. Harvard University researchers measured testosterone levels in 58 men who were single, married, or married with children. They found the testosterone levels of all the men were higher in the morning, then fell throughout the day, with the levels of the married men falling more sharply than those of bachelors.

“And fathers seem to show an even more dramatic difference,” said anthropologist Peter Gray in New Scientist.

Earlier studies have shown that artificially increasing testosterone in men leads them to play the field. In the same way lower rates of testosterone my encourage men to stay at home and embrace their role as family men.

Nonsexual activities like winning or losing at sports can affect testosterone levels, says Gray, so it shouldn’t be surprising to find that other behaviors, like interacting with family, can affect hormone levels as well.
